I was leafing through my Bible study journal and came across this study from November 2024. It reminded me of something powerful in Colossians 1:9-12: living a life worthy of the Lord starts with knowing His will.

I find that scripture is God’s way of speaking to our hearts, our minds, our souls , and our lives. Let’s dive into what this means and how you can apply it in your everyday life.

Why Paul’s Prayer in Colossians Matters Today.

In this passage, Paul prays for the believers in Colossae to be filled with the knowledge of God’s will through the Holy Spirit, who gives wisdom and understanding. This prayer is just as relevant for us today. Here’s why:

* Knowing God’s will brings clarity in a confusing world. It also helps us pray with direction, pray purposefully, and then we can know exactly what answers to expect. Knowing God’s will also ensures that we don’t vacillate in decision-making or question when instructions come to us because, as we know, our God is not the author of confusion.

* It helps us avoid living by trial and error. Knowing God’s will ensures we choose right in all times.

* It strengthens our faith and shapes our decisions.

5 Life-Changing Lessons from Colossians 1:9-12

1. Pray for God’s People (and yourself Too!)

Prayer isn’t selfish—it’s how we partner with God to see His will done in the lives of others. Paul’s example reminds me that interceding for others matters. Especially knowing the times we are in and now and how certain groups of people want to take the world in the wrong direction, it’s important to pray for our cities and nations and God’s people so everything and everyone can be aligned to His will for this current time.

2. Be filled with the knowledge of His Will.

How? By relying on the Holy Spirit. He gives the wisdom and understanding we need to live a life that glorifies God. The Holy Spirit came in order to guide us. Ignoring Him is ignoring wisdom and ignoring solutions.

3. Live Intentionally, Not by Trial and Error

When we know God’s will, we don’t waste time guessing. Our lives become purposeful and pleasing to Him. This affects even the smallest things like the career path we chose, the houses we live in, even daily activities like when to travel and even what times to move.

4. Bear Fruit in Every Good Work

Knowing God is not just about knowledge—it’s about results. As I grow in Him, my actions should reflect His nature. We are able to win souls without stress, heal the sick, partner with the gospel financially, and so much more.

5. Stay strong, patient, and thankful

Life isn’t always easy, but God gives us strength, patience, and joy. We get to live every day in gratitude, knowing that all things work out for our good always. Every day is a chance to give thanks because He has qualified us to share in His eternal inheritance.

How to Apply This in Your Life

Reading this passage challenged me to be intentional about my walk with God. Here are six practical steps you can take too:

1. Cultivate a Relationship with the Holy Spirit
Spend time in fellowship with Him every day.

2. Study the Word of God
Knowing His Word helps you discern His will.

3. Avoid Costly Mistakes
Knowing God means walking in wisdom and making better decisions. Even if the action seems small but in contrast with God’s Word, flee from it.

4. Spend Time in Prayer and Meditation
Prayer helps you hear God’s voice clearly.

5. Bear Good Fruits
Let your actions reflect Christ in every area of your life.

6. Obey the Promptings of the Spirit.
God doesn’t just expect our sacrifice, he revels in our obedience. Your obedience positions you for blessing and growth.

Memory Verse for Today

Colossians 1:11 (NLT)
“We also pray that you will be strengthened with all His glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy.”

Final Thoughts

This scripture is a gentle reminder that growth doesn’t happen by accident. It takes prayer, study, and surrender. As you walk in the knowledge of God’s will, you will see your life become more fruitful, joyful, and purposeful.

So, how are you going to apply this today?
