Having this understanding makes setting goals very easy.
Here are six biblical principles to guide you as you set goals for the new year:
Ask yourself some questions first: Are my goals glorifying God? Is Christ shining through my goals? Is Christ – like love being portrayed in my goals?
Let’s dive in!

1. Seek God’s Guidance First
Before setting any goals, take time to pray and seek God’s will for your life. When we leave everything in God’s hands, we see His hand in everything. When we align our plans with His purposes, we invite His blessings and direction.
Scripture:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
Action Step: Spend time in prayer and ask God to reveal His plans for you this year.
2. Compartmentalise your life: To make it easy, create the distinction between the different areas of your life. I personally put my goals into these different categories: spiritual growth, family, personal growth, business, financial goals, career, etc. And within each, there are subsets. For E.g, within my job, I also create subsets to include different areas like editing, content creation, social media management, etc. This helps me to break down my goals into achievable and measurable units and helps me keep track of each one easily.
3. Set Goals That Glorify God
The ultimate purpose of every goal we set should be to glorify God. Whether your goals are related to your career, family, or spiritual growth, they should reflect your desire to honor Him. Are your goals making the lives of others better and beating them down? Are there elements that are worldly, or are they aligned with God’s Word? You have to be sure you’re following God’s will.
Scripture:
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
Action Step: Evaluate each goal and ask yourself, “How does this goal specifically glorify God?”
4. Make Your Goals Specific and Measurable
The Bible encourages us to plan wisely and be intentional in our actions. Vague goals are hard to achieve, e.g., grow my following from this number to that number, then draw specific plans on how to do this. Or if it’s financial goals, every month as part of it, I want to gift at least one person every month, I write down the names and what exactly I want to give so I can factor this into my income.
Scripture:
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” (Luke 14:28)
Action Step: Write down your goals in detail and break them into smaller, actionable steps.
5. Be diligent, faithful, and truthful to yourself.
Being diligent and having integrity can never be over emphasised when it comes to setting goals and achieving them. Cutting corners might look like it’s working but, in truth, will always bounce back. Setting goals is only the first step; achieving them requires effort and perseverance. You also have to be ready to sit down periodically and face yourself, do an analysis and self introspection. This helps us way more than we see. It helps to make corrections and to re- strategize. We must be willing not only to be diligent and work hard but also to have the rough conversations with ourselves and make corrections.
Scripture:
“The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5)
Action Step: Create a realistic timeline for your goals and commit to taking consistent action.set aside time to periodically access yourself and your goals and make changes where necessary.
6. Trust God’s Timing and Surrender Your Plans.
As stated in the opening, knowing you have been made for God makes life easy.
Be willing to let go and let Him. This reduces the stress of trying to do it all by yourself.
Trusting God’s timing and surrendering our goals to Him demonstrates faith and humility.
Scripture:
“Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Proverbs 16:3)
Action Step: Pray often and consistently, study the Word, and meditate, so you can hear from God and be able to avoid errors in the actualization of your goals.
Conclusion
Setting goals is an opportunity to grow, serve, and glorify God. As you plan for the new year, remember to seek God first, align your goals with His will, and trust Him to guide your steps. With these biblical principles, you can confidently pursue your goals, knowing that God is with you every step of the way.
What are some of your goals for the new year?
